Sweet, gentle Kate came to us April 1 after surgery to remove her eyes. She was living in a feral colony and had a birth defect called microthalamus — her eyes didn’t fully develop and were very small. And to make matters worse, they were badly infected, so at almost a year old, she needed them to come out. Heartbreaking for her, but she’s adjusted well to the house pet life (she uses her litterbox, loves her cat fountain, and has her favorite perches both upstairs and downstairs in her foster home). Here’s the hard part—Kate needs someone who can give her a lot of time and patience. She’s not your typical friendly house cat, but she also couldn’t be returned to her colony because she has no sight. She’s semi-social versus feral—she doesn’t solicit for pets, but can walk up to her, pet her, and over time, she’s become much more accepting of people. She’s very treat motivated and loves toys, so she’s made a lot of progress since then in short sessions where she associates her foster family with fun and things she loves. Little by little, in her own way, she’s coming around. (She now sleeps in bed with her foster quite often and typically chooses to be in the same room as her people.) We’re trying to find a quiet foster home or foster-to-adopt home that can meet her where she is and accept her current independence. She does well with her foster home's cats and and small dog!
